Halfway Down the Stairs

a literary magazine for families to share

-- About this Site --

Halfway down the stairs isn't up, and isn't down. It isn't in the nursery, it isn't in the town. And all kinds of funny thoughts go running round my head. 'It isn't really anywhere! It's somewhere else instead!'

-A. A. Milne

Halfway Down the Stairs is an online literary magazine for children and their families. Each issue contains classic and traditional stories and verse chosen to reflect a particular theme, such as "The Night Sky" or "The Alphabet." These selections are taken from works in the public domain, which are no longer restricted by copyright laws.

Each issue of Halfway Down the Stairs also contains original content complementary to the theme. This original content usually includes activities, puzzles, book recommendations, essays, and nonfiction articles.

Halfway Down the Stairs is edited by Maureen Friel. HDS is basically an independent endeavor, though my sister Megan deserves the credit for the site's HTML layout. Megan is the editor of Sparrow Tree Square, a magazine which HDS readers may also enjoy. As for me, I am a nineteen-year-old freshman in the Virtual Vermont College of Union Institute and University. I love to write poetry, learn new things, and of course, read. My favorite author (besides A. A. Milne) is P. G. Wodehouse.
